Field representative team prepares for 2026 field season
As the 2026 field season approaches, our field representative team has been preparing for the months ahead by taking part in Field Leadership and Skills training in Utah, USA, from 19–23 April.
Why we continuously train our field reps
Keeping participants safe is central to every field class we run. Field courses take place outdoors and in remote locations, which involve added challenges, including unpredictable weather, hiking on and off trails, hazardous flora and fauna, travel between sites, limited access to healthcare, incident response, and group management. Much of our risk planning is completed in advance or handled behind the scenes during the course, ensuring our participants to enjoy a first-class experience.
What the training covered
The hands-on, field-based course was designed to strengthen the core skills needed to support successful field courses, while reinforcing the key responsibilities of the field representative role.
It brought together our established team members Daniel Paez, Sean Rayley, Hannah Venning and Mary Harrow, alongside three new reps joining for the 2026 season: Harry Poole and Patrick Blain from the UK, and David Lewis from North America.
The training began with presentations in Price, Utah, before moving into three full field days focused on practice, scenarios, and review of previous issues and case studies. It was structured to reflect the pace and pressures of a real field course, giving the team valuable experience in leadership, communication, decision-making, incident response, and supporting both participants and instructors.
Key insights and outcomes
A key aim of the event was to strengthen group dynamics and give newer reps the opportunity to learn from more experienced colleagues. By the end of the training, the team had developed both practical field skills and stronger working relationships, while also reinforcing the importance of clear communication, anticipating problems, and balancing safety, logistics, and participant experience.
Feedback from the team was overwhelmingly positive. Harry Poole described the course as “a really valuable experience,” while Hannah Venning called it “a really well put together training event” and “a great refresher.”
As the field season gets underway, this training will support stronger leadership, more effective group management, and greater confidence in field-based decision-making, while also helping to ensure courses are delivered safely.
